Exploration Company Fined $3,000 For Littering

A mining exploration company has been fined $3,000 for littering on Crown land in the Timmins area.

Geotech Ltd. of Aurora pleaded guilty to depositing material on Crown land contrary to the Public Lands Act.

The court heard that on July 21, 2009, a Ministry of Natural Resources technician discovered six abandoned Jet A fuel drums on Crown land in Zavitz Township south of Timmins. An investigation revealed that Geotech Ltd. had conducted mining exploration in that area from January 23 to February 4, 2008, and had abandoned the fuel drums after the exploration work was completed. One of the abandoned fuel drums was still full of fuel. Geotech Ltd. recovered all of the fuel drums by helicopter before the court date, as requested by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Justice of the Peace Dolores Boyuk heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Timmins, on September 30, 2010.
