Ban and $2,700 In Fines For Multiple Offences

A Manitoba resident received a total of $2,700 in fines and a two-year fishing ban for several angling-related offences

Michael Hoitink of Winnipeg was fined $1,250 for providing false statements to a conservation officer, $750 for using another person’s fishing licence, $200 for failing to produce his own fishing licence, and $500 for operating a motorboat without proper flotation devices for all passengers. He is banned from fishing in Ontario until December 31, 2012.

The court heard that on July 17, 2010, conservation officers checked Hoitink’s boat while on routine patrol on the Winnipeg River in Kenora District. Hoitink failed to produce a valid fishing licence.

The officers accompanied Hoitink back to his camp, where he gave them photo identification. The officers noted some physical discrepancies between Hoitink and his photo identification, and ran several checks on the name. They found that two Hoitinks, close in age, lived at the same Winnipeg address. After further investigation, Hoitink produced a driver’s licence with his own name and photo that did not match the fishing licence and photo identification given to the officers.

Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kenora, on October 19, 2010.
