$3,500 Fine For Commercial Fishing Violation
A Lake Erie commercial fishing boat captain has been fined $3,500 for harvesting more fish than allowed.
Lino Cabral of Wheatley, the captain of the commercial fishing vessel Teresa Maria, pleaded guilty to violating the terms and conditions of his commercial fishing licence.
The court heard that as part of an investigation into the over-harvesting of yellow perch from the Essex County waters of Lake Erie, conservation officers learned that on April 4, 2009, while fishing out of Wheatley Harbor, Cabral reached his spring quota for yellow perch. On April 6, 2009, he caught an additional 1,113 kilograms (2,453 pounds) of yellow perch in excess of his quota.
Justice of the Peace Salma Jafar heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Windsor, on October 27, 2010.
