Hefty Fines and License Suspension for Abandoning Cow Moose

A moose hunter who chose not to report a cow moose he shot by mistake has been fined $3,000.

Andre Perrin, of Hanmer, Ontario, pleaded guilty to unlawfully hunting moose without a licence and leaving the meat to spoil. In addition to the fine, he was suspended from moose hunting in Ontario for one year.

The court heard that on October 25, 2008, a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer received a tip from hunters who had found a shot and abandoned cow moose in Roberts Township, north of Capreol, Ontario. Evidence was gathered with the assistance of a canine unit, and the investigation led to Perrin.

The case was heard by Justice of the Peace Marcel Bedard in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sudbury, on September 14, 2010.

The ministry reminds hunters that if they harvest a game animal it is an offence to leave the flesh to spoil, even if the animal was shot by mistake.
