Three Men Fined $21,000 For Walleye Caught In A Fish Sanctuary
Three men have been fined a total of $21,000 for fishing for walleye in a fish sanctuary.
Joesph Andruski of Tiverton, Matthew Andruski of Walkerton and Neal Girodat, of Hanover, each pleaded guilty to fishing in a fish sanctuary, fishing for walleye during the closed season, and catching and retaining walleye during the closed season. The men were fined $7,000 and had their fishing equipment seized.
The court heard that on April 5, 2010, a conservation officer from the Aurora District was conducting a patrol of the Highway 7A fish sanctuary, near the Town of Port Perry, when he came across two large bags of live walleye. A search of the area found three men hiding in the long grass nearby, each with a fishing rod. The fish and fishing equipment were seized and have been forfeited to the Crown.
Justice of the Peace George Griffith heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Whitby, on September 1, 2010.
