"MNR TIPS" Call Leads To Fine

A St. Catharines woman has been fined $1,000 for illegally keeping protected species in captivity.

Audrey Roach pleaded guilty to keeping live, specially protected reptiles in captivity under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

The court heard that on April 20, 2010, the MNR TIPS line received information about wildlife being kept in captivity at a residence in the City of St. Catharines. An investigation by Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers found that 11 midland painted turtles were being kept as pets. Midland painted turtles are native to Ontario and cannot be kept, bought, sold or traded without authorization. The turtles were seized and forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Bruce Phillips heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, St. Catharines on August 20, 2010.

The public is reminded that wildlife should remain in its natural environment.
