Fines For Failing to Submit Mandatory Moose Harvest Report
Six hunters who received moose tags for the 2009 hunt in the Pembroke and Bancroft areas have been fined $150 each for failing to report the results of their hunt.
The hunters are also ineligible to receive a validation tag in the 2010 draw to hunt for a calf, cow or bull moose in Wildlife Management Units 48, 55A, 55B and 57.
The court heard that successful applicants for moose tags were mailed a package containing a validation tag, the mandatory moose harvest report and a letter explaining the consequences if the survey was not returned to the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act requires that individuals submit the questionnaire within 14 days following the last day of the hunt.
Special regulations in Wildlife Management Units 48, 55A, 55B and 57 require all moose tag holders to complete reports on the results of their hunt and register their harvest at an authorized check station. These regulations were put in place in 2004 to provide information that would help the ministry promote growth in the eastern Ontario moose population.
The cases were heard by Justice of the Peace Barry Moran in the Ontario Court of Justice, Bancroft, July 6, and by Justice of the Peace Ivana Baldelli in the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke, July 19, 2010.
