Fined $2,200 For Careless Hunting And Trespassing

A local man has been fined a total of $2,200 and suspended from hunting for one year after pleading guilty to hunting-related violations.

Christopher Kelford, of Lanark, was fined $1,000 and suspended from hunting for one year for careless hunting. He was fined a further $1,000 for discharging a firearm from a road right-of-way and $200 for trespassing while hunting.

Kelford was on his way home near Lanark when he noticed a large deer by the road. Despite being told by a resident that he could not hunt on the property, the defendant shot the deer from the roadway. Kelford was confronted by several residents who were able to identify him. The OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resources investigated and charges were laid by a conservation officer.

Justice of the Peace Raymond J. Switzer heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Perth, on May 11, 2010.
