$12,000 in Fines for Illegal Log Retrieval From the Ottawa River

Logs End Inc. of Ottawa has been fined $12,000 for illegally retrieving sunken logs from the Ontario side of the Ottawa River.

Between August 14 and August 20, 2009, Logs End Inc. lifted approximately 80 logs from the bed of the Ottawa River in the Township of Ross north of McLarens Settlement in the vicinity of Big Elbow Island. The company did not have a permit for this activity. However, court was told that Logs End Inc. was aware of the requirement for a permit and had been issued one in 1999.

The case was heard before Justice of the Peace Jane Wilson In the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke, April 30, 2010.

A permit is required under the Public Lands Act in order to conduct sunken log retrieval from the bed of Ontario waters, including the Ottawa River. The permit ensures that environmental protection is considered and authorizes the removal and sale of logs from the bed of the water body.
