$3,500 In Fines For Moose Hunting In Provincial Park

A Brantford, Ontario man has been convicted of moose hunting in a provincial park and attempting to cover up his activity.

Mark Cadman was convicted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and fined $1,500 for shooting a bull moose in Pakwash Provincial Park. He was also fined $2,000 for obstructing a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer and prohibited from hunting in Ontario for two years.

Court heard that on October 12, 2009, conservation officers responded to a complaint and discovered a dead moose that had been shot in Pakwash Provincial Park, 19 kilometres north of Ear Falls in Red Lake District. Through witness statements, physical evidence of shell casings, and DNA of the moose’s blood, officers determined that Cadman shot the moose in the park and moved it to a site outside of the park. Cadman’s rifle was seized and will be returned once all of his fines are paid. The moose was forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace, Roger C. McCraw, Jr., heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Red Lake, on April 7, 2010.
