$4,050 In Fines For Moose Hunting Violations
Four Sturgeon Falls residents have been fined a total of $4,050 for charges related to illegally killing a cow moose.
Keith Morrison pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 and had his hunting privileges suspended for one year for illegally killing a cow moose without a licence.
Sylvain Desormiers pleaded guilty to obstructing a conservation officer and possessing illegally killed wildlife. He was fined $2,000.
Shaun Lajeunesse and Jim Brunet both pleaded guilty to possessing illegally killed wildlife and were fined $750 and $300, respectively.
Court heard that on October 10, 2009, Morrison mistakenly shot an adult cow moose, thinking it was a calf. Morrison gave the moose to Desormiers who attempted to claim the moose under a Harvester’s Certificate, a document granted to qualified individuals by the Métis Nation of Ontario that provides specific hunting and fishing rights. Brunet and Lajeunesse assisted with the gutting and transportation of the illegally killed moose.
Justice of the Peace Michel Moreau heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sturgeon Falls, on January 18, 2010.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds hunters that if they accidentally kill wildlife for which they do not have the appropriate licence and tag/seal, they must report it to the ministry immediately.
