Fines for Unlawfully Operating Gravel Pits

Abitibi Consolidated Company of Canada from Iroquois Falls and a man from Cochrane have been fined for operating gravel pits without permits.

In one case, Abitibi Consolidated pleaded guilty to the charge under the Aggregates Resources Act and has been fined $2,000.

Court heard that during July and August of 2009 Abitibi Consolidated operated a pit in Challies Township, east of Cochrane, without approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources.

In a separate case, Douglas Burkholder, of Cochrane, pleaded guilty to operating a gravel pit in an unorganized area near Hwy. 652 north of Cochrane in September and October of 2009 without approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources. Burkholder was fined $1,000.
Justice of the Peace Dolores Boyuk heard both cases in the Ontario Court of Justice, Cochrane, on January 14, 2010.

The Aggregate Resources Act provides for the management, regulation and rehabilitation of pit and quarry operations to minimize the adverse impact of these operations on the environment and public safety. It also ensures the rehabilitation of pits and quarries.
