Toronto Supermarket Fined $3,500 For Possession Of Live Invasive Fish
A Toronto supermarket has been fined $3,500 for possession of live invasive fish.
The New Wai Hong Supermarket pleaded guilty to unlawfully possessing live bighead carp.
The court heard that on February 21, 2009, conservation officers conducted supermarket inspections in Toronto. A live bighead carp was located in the fish market section of the New Wai Hong Supermarket.
Justice of the Peace Alice Napier heard the case in the Old City Hall Courthouse, Toronto, on January 13, 2010.
Since 2005, it has been illegal in Ontario to possess live invasive fish, including bighead, grass, black and silver carp, because of the significant threat they pose to our lake systems. These fish have the ability to become a dominant fish species by out-competing most native species for microscopic food at the base of the food chain. They also consume wetland plants that are important spawning, nursery and feeding habitats for many native species.
