Unlawful Importation Proves Costly For Commercial Baitfish Operator

A Kenora area resident has been fined $2,000 for baitfish violations.

Jerry Wiebe, of Keewatin, Ontario, was fined for importing live baitfish from Manitoba into Ontario and making a false statement in a document.

Court heard that in 2008, Wiebe admitted to importing live baitfish that were trapped on a commercial baitfishing licence in Manitoba.  The minnows were then used to supply his commercial baitfish business in Ontario.  Court also heard that Wiebe provided false information in his baitfish harvest report, a document he was required to submit to the Ministry of Natural Resources as a licensed commercial bait harvester.

Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kenora, on November 5, 2009.

The ministry would like to remind the public that importing live baitfish and other aquatic organisms into Ontario poses a significant risk to aquatic ecosystems and valuable fisheries.  Imported baitfish and the unseen organisms contained in water used to transport fish can result in the introduction of non-native species to Ontario’s lakes.
