$4,500 Fine For Possessing Live Invasive Fish in Toronto

A Toronto supermarket has been fined $4,500 for unlawful possession of live invasive fish.

Representatives of Fuyao Supermarket pleaded guilty to unlawfully possessing live Bighead carp.

The court heard that on December 12, 2008, conservation officers conducting supermarket inspections found live Bighead carp swimming in a tank in the fish market section of the Fuyao Supermarket located in the City of Toronto.

Justice of the Peace Hunt heard the case in the Old City Hall Courthouse, Toronto, on October 14, 2009.

Bighead carp pose a significant threat to our lake systems as they can become a dominant fish species by out-competing most native species for microscopic food at the base of the food chain while consuming wetland plants that are important spawning, nursery and feeding habitats for many native species.
