Shooting Canada Goose With A Rifle On Stony Lake Proves Costly

 

A Stony Lake resident pleaded guilty to charges under the Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Act and Migratory Birds Regulations and was fined a total of $4500.

 

Allan Chapman was fined $3500 for discharging a firearm without reasonable
consideration for people or property; $500 for hunting a migratory bird during the closed season; and $500 for hunting a migratory bird with a rifle. The rifle was ordered forfeited to the Crown.

 

Court heard that on August 16, 2009, Chapman fired a .22 caliber rifle at a group of swimming Canada geese on Stony Lake in Douro – Dummer Township. The bullet killed one of the geese. The shot was fired in the direction of cottages on an island only 365 metres away. A bullet fired from a .22 rifle can be dangerous for up to a mile.

 

Justice of the Peace Stephen Lancaster heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Peterborough, on October 8, 2009.
