Aggregate Operations Fined $30,000 For Violations
Vicdom Sand and Gravel (Ontario) Limited and 978970 Ontario Inc. have been fined a total of $30,000 for violations under the Aggregate Resources Act.
Vicdom Sand and Gravel (Ontario) Limited was fined $20,000 after pleading guilty to breaching the conditions of its aggregate pit’s operating licence and providing false information on the annual Compliance Assessment Report. 978970 Ontario Inc. also pleaded guilty to the same charges and was fined $10,000.
On August 20, 2008, Ministry of Natural Resources Aurora District conservation officers conducted a routine inspection of two aggregate operations in the Township of Uxbridge. Both sites are licensed under the Aggregate Resources Act. They found both sites did not comply with their approved site plans as significant excavation had occurred into the setback areas of the properties. On further investigation, it was also determined that the two companies had provided false information on their annual Compliance Assessment Reports.
Justice of the Peace George A. Griffith heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Whitby, on August 24, 2009.
The Aggregate Resources Act provides for the management, regulation and rehabilitation of pit and quarry operations to minimize the adverse impact of these operations on the environment and public safety. It also ensures the rehabilitation of pits and quarries.
