Be a voice for those who can’t speak for themselves

My name is Mike Hamilton. I am a Conservation Officer with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, currently residing in Sault Ste. Marie.  I have been enjoying this position for ten years, prior to which I worked as a Fish and Wildlife Technician, Forestry Technician, Deputy Sheriff and Sheriff.

I am a graduate of the Sault College where I completed the Forestry and Fish and Wildlife Technologist programs.

Family life is important to me, and the flexibility of my career ensures I can enjoy it.

When I’m not at work I can be found at the soccer field with my wife, watching or coaching soccer for my daughters, camping, or enjoying time with friends.

I began my career with the Ministry of Natural Resources working summers as a fish and wildlife technician while I was a student.  During this time I was given the opportunity to patrol with Sault Ste. Marie Conservation Officers as a volunteer.  I guess this is where their passion and devotion for their job was instilled in me.

These volunteer hours advanced into my obtaining my Deputy Conservation Officer badge.  I still remember the excitement of my appointment and trying to squeeze more hours into the day while I was in the field.

Whether you are experiencing the excitement in the faces of children you are teaching, carrying out decoy operations, or patrolling the outdoors in your truck, ATV, boat or snowmobile, there is always a challenge awaiting you.

Natural Resource crime affects everyone.  The consequence of actions such as littering or poaching will be felt by future generations.  Protecting nature and providing a voice for those who can’t speak for themselves is truly inspiring.

So remember to be careful if you decide to experience what it feels like to patrol with a Conservation Officer.  You might just get bit by the bug too!
