Tourist Outfitter Fined $6,500 For Illegally Lodging Guests On Crown Land
A Red Lake-area lodge owner must pay $6,500 in fines for using public land at remote northwestern Ontario lakes without permission from the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Clint Perkins of Winnipeg was convicted of unauthorized use of Crown land and fined $5,000. Perkins was also fined $1,500 for providing a false statement to a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer.
The court heard that Perkins owns and operates Way North Lodge in the Red Lake District. During the fall of 2006 he placed temporary shelters on Crown land to lodge paying guests. Perkins erected the shelters at three lakes – Yaeger, Madden and Kennedy – without obtaining permission from the ministry to use public land. During the investigation Perkins denied using the land in question.
Justice of the Peace Pat Daub heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kenora, on June 4, 2009.
