Ecosystems are dynamic complexes of plants, animals and micro-organisms and their non-living environment, interacting as a functional unit. The term ecosystem can describe small scale units, such as a drop of water, as well as large scale units, such as the oceans.
Ecosystems and the associated organisms have adapted to specific climatic conditions over time. As the climate changes, there could be impacts on ecosystems. Climate change may disrupt or alter an ecosystem and the ecosystem services it provides to our society. Ecosystems keep our air and water clean, help regulate our climate, and provide us with sources of food, shelter, clothing and medicine.
