The Boreal Silviculture Program

Research Team

  • Doug Reid, Research Scientist
  • Nick Buda, Research Forester
  • Eric Kahkonen, Research Technician
  • Robert Whaley, Senior Technician

The Boreal Silviculture Program (BSP) was initiated in 2005 to examine the effects and effectiveness of silvicultural practices in the boreal regions of Ontario through the use of manipulated experiments and planned scientific investigations.  The BSP takes an integrated approach to investigate the effects and effectiveness of silvicultural practices in order to develop a holistic understanding of the role of silviculture (the art and science of harvesting and tending forests) in the managed public forest.  Appropriate application of silviculture is needed to ensure that Ontario’s forests provide desired products and services sustainably. To achieve this, research efforts undertaken by the BSP include examination of a wide range of topics including (but not limited to) stand dynamics, tree physiology, site quality, forest growth and yield, autecology (the ecology of individual species), plant community ecology, site disturbance, wood products, economics, and plant/animal interactions.

Further program details can be found in the BSP Brochure (pdf - 2014kb)
