Centre for Northern Forest Ecosystem Research (CNFER)

What is CNFER?

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resource’s Centre for Northern Forest Ecosystem Research (CNFER) in Thunder Bay is an applied research unit with a focus on the effects of forestry practices on boreal ecosystems. Built in 1990, CNFER was given a mandate to conduct long-term research on the impacts of full-tree harvesting and on the effects and the effectiveness of resource management guidelines designed to protect moose and other wildlife habitat, fish habitat, and tourism values in Ontario. CNFER is now evolving to meet new issues and priorities in forest, fish & wildlife, renewable energy, and water science, with an emphasis on cross-disciplinary approaches.

Located on campus at Lakehead University (LU), CNFER is in close contact with the LU Biology, Forestry, and Outdoor Recreation programs, including the supervision of graduate and honours students. CNFER has built strong linkages with other academic, non-governmental, and industrial partners and continues to seek new opportunities for collaboration.

There are currently six major research programs at CNFER. To learn more about each program and its associated projects, results, and staff, please navigate the following links:
