Wetlands are areas where the land is permanently or seasonally wet. Water-loving reeds, shrubs, grasses, and flowers all grow in wetlands, providing food and habitat for the hundreds of species of animals that live there. Read More...
Why are Wetlands Important?
There are hundreds of species of fish, birds, and amphibians that only live in wetlands. Amazing plants such as carnivorous pitcher plants and sundews, are found in some wetlands.
These soggy lands also act as nurseries for some species of frogs, salamanders, fish, and even dragonflies. Read more...

How are Wetlands Protected?
Wetlands are recognized in Ontario and throughout the world as diverse and very productive natural areas. The protection of our wetlands has been strengthened by recent changes to provincial policies, regulations, and legislation.

Wetland Conservation Program
Wetland conservation in Ontario is a cooperative effort. The ministry’s wetland work involves collaboration among staff in offices across the province and with our wetland conservation partners.
Wetland Conservation staff of MNR’s Biodiversity Policy and Program Development Section provide leadership related to wetlands policy, planning and related technical guidance, data standards for wetland evaluation and mapping,and coordination of wetland evaluation training courses
