As part of the MNR's Wetland Conservation Program, staff:

  • Provide policy advice and support;
  • maintain and provide training in the use of the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES);
  • participate in the Canada-Ontario Agreement Respecting the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem (“COA”). Wetland conservation is one component of this broad, ecosystem-based program;
  • participate in the implementation of the Great Lakes Wetland Conservation Action Plan (GLWCAP). Implementation of GLWCAP is one means of meeting COA commitments; and
  • contribute to the implementation of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan by participating in the Ontario Eastern Habitat Joint Venture (OEHJV)

Other MNR staff participate in wetland conservation by undertaking and reviewing wetland evaluations, helping municipalities protect wetlands through land use planning, providing input and support to the Conservation Land Tax Incentive Program (CLTIP), assisting with wetland acquisitions, and carrying out stewardship projects for wetlands and associated uplands.

Much of the ministry’s work involves collaboration with other government agencies including: individual conservation authorities and municipal planning authorities,  Conservation Ontario, Canadian Wildlife Service, the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.  MNR also works closely with non-governmental organizations including: Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ontario Nature and Wildlife Habitat Canada.
