Firefighter Positions

SP-100 positions are available to individuals that have completed the SP-100 training, have first aid training and have passed the PRE-FIT.

Here is a list of the positions that are available:

MNR Type I Ranger Crews

Number of positions - 700

These are potential positions available annually; actual availability varies year to year depending on the turnover. Vacancies are difficult to predict as notification does not have to be provided until a few weeks before employment begins. The 30% annual turnover figure has been used, but each Fire Management Headquarters should be contacted directly as to actual job opportunities. However, successful completion of the SP-100 firefighter training requirements does not guarantee employment.

Contract Type II Crews

Number of positions - 640

These are potential positions available annually; actual availability varies year to year. Each company should be contacted directly for accurate figures each year, as well as hiring criteria that may be specific to each company. The MNR does not monitor the number of these positions. You must deal directly with the companies.

MNR Extra Firefighters (EFF)

Extra firefighters, as well as service and support staff are hired as required, during periods of escalated fire activity. This is a fluid number and varies greatly depending on the need during very busy fire seasons. The period of employment varies and also depends on a number of circumstances, including number of fires, size of fires, severity of the fires, availability of staff, and changing weather conditions.

In the past few years a number of SP-100 graduates have also found employment with Agencies/Companies who operate in or have responsibilities in forested areas. Agencies should be contacted directly for any employment opportunities or contact the local offices of Human Resources Development Canada. The MNR does not monitor these potential positions and this should not be considered a complete list. You must deal directly with the companies.
